Moisture is the silent killer of filament quality. Here's how to store, dry, and protect every material — from PLA to Nylon.

Thermoplastic filaments are hygroscopic — they actively draw water vapor from the air through a process called absorption. Unlike surface moisture (which drying removes in minutes), absorbed moisture penetrates into the polymer chain itself and requires sustained heat to drive out.
When wet filament passes through a hot nozzle, the water vaporizes explosively. This creates microbubbles in the melt, causing all the symptoms above. Some materials absorb moisture in hours; others take days or weeks. But once absorbed, every material is affected.

Oven warning: Most kitchen ovens are inaccurate at low temps and run 10–20°C hot. Verify with a thermometer. PLA can warp at 60°C+ — if your oven can't hold 45°C reliably, use a food dehydrator instead.

Drying fixes wet filament. Storage prevents it from getting wet again. The goal: keep relative humidity below 15% RH around your spools.
Sterilite or IKEA 365+ containers with silica gel packets. Cheap, effective, scalable. Replace or recharge desiccant every 3–6 months.
