How to Fix PLA Stringing

    Those annoying hairy threads between parts — here's exactly how to eliminate them. Retraction, temperature, speed: every setting explained.

    1. 1. Increase retraction by 0.5mm (e.g. 1.0 → 1.5mm direct drive)
    2. 2. Lower nozzle temp by 5°C (e.g. 215 → 210°C)

    What Causes PLA Stringing?

    Stringing (also called "hairy prints" or "cobwebbing") happens when molten filament oozes out of the nozzle while it travels between parts. Instead of clean air moves, you get thin plastic threads spanning gaps.

    The root causes are almost always one of these three things:

    Too Hot

    High temp = low viscosity = more ooze during travel

    Bad Retraction

    Insufficient retraction doesn't pull melt back far enough

    Slow Travel

    More time in the air = more time to drip

    Fix #1: Retraction Settings

    Retraction pulls filament back before a travel move, creating a vacuum that prevents ooze. This is the most impactful setting for stringing.

    Don't over-retract! Too much retraction causes gaps, under-extrusion, and can grind the filament. If prints start showing holes or blobs after you increase retraction, you've gone too far.

    Fix #2: Lower Print Temperature

    Hotter PLA is runnier, and runnier PLA drips more during travel. A 5–10°C reduction can dramatically reduce stringing without hurting print quality.

    Method: Run a temperature tower from 225°C down to 190°C to find your filament's sweet spot. Every brand is different.

    Fix #3: Increase Travel Speed

    The faster the nozzle crosses an open gap, the less time melt has to drip. Most slicers default travel speed to 150mm/s — but many printers can go to 200mm/s or faster with no quality loss.

    Slow (<100 mm/s)

    Long hang time → lots of stringing

    Medium (120–150 mm/s)

    Slicer default — still some stringing

    Fast (180–220 mm/s) ⭐

    Modern slicers have powerful anti-stringing tools most people never use.

    Combing / Avoid Crossing Perimeters Impact: High

    Routes travel moves inside the model instead of crossing open air.

    Z-Hop on Retract Impact: Medium

    Lifts nozzle 0.2–0.4mm before travel so it doesn't drag strings across surfaces.

    Cura: Travel → Z Hop When Retracted → 0.2mm

    Coast at End Impact: Medium

    Stops extruding slightly before end of line, using pressure in nozzle to finish.

    Cura: Travel → Coasting (experimental) → 0.2–0.4mm

    Wipe Nozzle Impact: Low–Medium

    After retraction, moves nozzle over just-printed perimeter to wipe excess.

    Cura: Travel → Wipe Nozzle → enabled

    Fix #5: Dry Your Filament

    If you've tuned retraction, temperature, and speed and still see stringing, your filament is almost certainly wet. Moisture absorbed into PLA causes bubbling inside the nozzle, which creates pressure that forces melt out during travel.

    • Crackling/popping sounds during printing (moisture boiling)

    • Inconsistent extrusion — blobs and thin spots alternating

    • Steam/smoke wisping from nozzle

    • Stringing that persists despite perfect settings

    • Rough, matte, or bubbly surface finish

    Still Stringing? Advanced Checks

    🔧 Check nozzle for partial clog

    A partial clog causes pressure buildup that forces ooze during travel. Do a cold pull (clean the nozzle at 90°C) to check.

    📏 Calibrate e-steps (extruder steps)

    If your extruder over-extrudes, there's more pressure in the system even after retraction. Calibrate e-steps if you haven't.

    🌡️ Check thermistor accuracy

    If your temp reads 210°C but actual is 225°C, no amount of settings will fix it. Use a thermocouple to verify.

    🧵 Switch filament brand

    Some cheap PLAs have inconsistent diameter or poor formulation. Try a brand-name PLA (Prusament, Polymaker, Bambu) and see if stringing improves immediately.
