Diameter Consistency
CriticalDiameter variation causes inconsistent flow, over/under-extrusion. Best brands hold ±0.02–0.03mm. Cheap brands can vary ±0.1mm.
Roundness
HighAn oval cross-section causes the same problems as diameter variation. Hard to detect without a micrometer.
Moisture Content
HighGood brands dry filament during manufacturing and seal properly. Wet filament on arrival = poor quality control.
Color Consistency
MediumColor should match spool-to-spool and across the same spool. Cheap brands fade or shift mid-print.
Tangle-Free Spooling
MediumTangled spools cause print failures mid-job. Premium brands spool correctly; some budget brands don't.
Buy grey or white for prototyping. Calibrate settings once on a neutral color, then switch to premium colors when printing final pieces.
Don't buy the absolute cheapest. $12/kg filament often has poor tolerances. $18-20/kg hits the sweet spot of quality + value.
Check the spool weight. Some brands sell 750g as 1kg. Look for net weight on the label.
Store properly immediately. Even good filament degrades if left open. Seal with desiccant after opening.
