    Wood-filled PLA looks stunning — and it's surprisingly printable. Here's everything you need: settings, color control via temperature, and finishing techniques.

    🌳 What is Wood PLA?

    Wood PLA is standard PLA mixed with 15–40% wood fiber, bamboo, cork, or sawdust particles. It prints like PLA but looks and feels like real wood — you can sand, stain, and finish it.

    The unique bonus: Temperature controls color — lower temp = lighter wood tone, higher temp = darker, more charred look.

    Temperature Controls Color 🎨

    This is Wood PLA's killer feature. The wood particles inside react to heat — higher temps oxidize them, creating darker tones like real wood staining or burning.

    Pro technique: Print different layers at different temperatures to simulate natural wood grain variation. Start a print at 195°C, increase to 215°C mid-print for varied tones.

    Post-Processing

    Sand with 120→220→400 grit

    Sand along layer lines first, then across. Water-sanding (wet 400 grit) gives the smoothest finish. Wood PLA sands beautifully unlike regular PLA.

    Stain with wood stain

    Water-based wood stains (Minwax, Varathane) soak into the wood particles. Apply, let sit 5 min, wipe off. Dramatically improves realism.

    Seal with polyurethane or lacquer

    Protects the stain and gives a professional finish. Matte or satin sheen looks most realistic.

    Torch for weathering effect

    Quick pass with a heat gun or lighter darkens raised areas, simulating aged wood grain. Test on scrap first.

    Watch Out For

    Nozzle clogging: Wood particles accumulate. Use 0.5–0.6mm nozzle, reduce retraction, and do cold pulls regularly.

    Abrasive on nozzle: Wood particles wear standard brass nozzles over time. Hardened steel nozzles last longer.

    Not structural: Wood PLA is decorative. Lower strength than regular PLA — don't use for functional parts.
